Standby Rescue

On-site rope rescue personnel and safety infrastructure for extreme sports events and competitions — ready to respond the instant something goes wrong.

Tell Us About Your Project

What It Is

Rescue-ready rope systems, staffed and standing by before anything goes wrong.

Extreme sports events and competitions get standby rope rescue personnel from Gravity Line, whose technicians rig rescue-ready rope systems on-site and remain in position for the duration of the event — not on call from off-site, but positioned and ready to respond within the critical first minutes of an incident. Gravity Line provides both the rope safety infrastructure (anchor systems, lowering lines, litter-ready rigging) and the certified personnel to operate it, so event organizers don't have to assemble a rescue capability from separate vendors.

Our standby rescue team is led by Philippe Wheelock, who spent over a decade as Lead Climbing Ranger for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and supervised the U.S. Antarctic Program's search-and-rescue team — someone who has made real rescue decisions under real conditions, not just trained for them. That's the standard every event we cover is staffed to.

What We Provide

Four ways we keep an event covered.

Pre-Event Rope Rescue Rigging

Anchor systems, lowering lines, and litter-ready rigging installed at the specific hazard points of the course or venue before competitors or athletes are ever at risk.

On-Site Standby Personnel

Certified rope rescue technicians positioned at the venue for the full duration of the event, not on call from an off-site location.

Rapid High-Angle Extraction

The ability to reach and lower an injured athlete from a cliff face, tower, or other vertical terrain within minutes, not after a scramble to assemble equipment.

Coordination with Event Medical & Safety Staff

Our rescue personnel integrate with the event's existing medical and safety plan rather than operating as a disconnected vendor.

Why Event Organizers Choose Gravity Line

Rescue experience you can actually verify.

Led by real search-and-rescue experience

Our standby rescue lead, Philippe Wheelock, is a former Lead Climbing Ranger for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, a former Climbing Ranger at Mt. Rainier, a DOI-qualified helicopter short-haul operator, and a supervisor of the U.S. Antarctic Program's SAR team.

Dual certification your insurer will recognize

Every technician holds both SPRAT and IRATA International certification, satisfying the safety documentation many event insurers and sanctioning bodies require before approving a course or venue.

Built for terrain other safety teams can't reach

Our expedition and adventure climbing background means we can rig and respond on genuinely technical terrain — cliff faces, towers, off-trail courses — not just standard-access venues.

Personnel, not just a plan

Standby rescue is on-site execution, not a document. It complements Gravity Line's separate Risk Management & Safety Planning service, but this is the team physically on rope when something happens.

Events We Support

Climbing and bouldering competitions, extreme sports events (highlining, BASE, big air, downhill), obstacle and adventure races on technical terrain, and any competition or event with a hazard point that a standard ground-based medical team can't safely reach.

How We Work

From site walk to full teardown.

01

Pre-Event Site & Hazard Assessment

We walk the course or venue in advance to identify every point where a competitor could require rope rescue and where a rescue system needs to be pre-rigged.

02

Rescue System Design & Rigging

We install anchor systems, lowering lines, and litter-ready rigging at each identified hazard point before the event begins.

03

Coordination with Event Medical & Safety Teams

We integrate our rescue plan and communication protocol with the event's existing medical, safety, and operations staff.

04

On-Site Standby Coverage

Our technicians remain positioned at the venue for the full duration of the event, ready to respond the moment they're needed.

05

Post-Event De-Rig & Debrief

Full teardown with no lasting impact on the venue, plus a debrief on anything worth adjusting for the next event.

FAQ

Common questions about standby rope rescue.

Who provides standby rope rescue personnel for extreme sports events?

Gravity Line provides standby rope rescue personnel for extreme sports events and competitions. Our technicians rig rescue-ready rope systems at the event's hazard points before competition begins and remain on-site for the duration, so a high-angle rescue can start within minutes rather than after equipment and personnel are assembled from scratch.

What kinds of events need standby rope rescue?

Any event where a competitor or participant could be injured somewhere a standard ground-based medical team can't safely reach — climbing and bouldering competitions, highlining and BASE events, big-air and downhill courses, and obstacle or adventure races that cross vertical or exposed terrain.

Is standby rescue the same as Gravity Line's Risk Management & Safety Planning service?

No — they're complementary but different. Risk Management & Safety Planning is documentation and planning: site assessments, emergency action plans, and safety protocols. Standby Rescue is the on-site execution of that plan: certified technicians and pre-rigged rope systems physically present and ready to respond during the event itself.

Can Gravity Line provide the safety documentation event insurers or sanctioning bodies require, in addition to on-site personnel?

Yes. Every technician holds dual SPRAT and IRATA International certification, and our team can document the rescue plan and site safety assessment alongside the standby coverage — the same documentation many event insurers and sanctioning bodies require before approving a course or venue.

Every project starts with a conversation.
